The Red Bull star has opened up after Sunday's drama

Max Verstappen has admitted that he feels he's 'unlucky' after the Red Bull driver was forced to withdraw from the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.

In the early stages of the race, Kimi Antonelli's car collided with Verstappen's own vehicle - meaning the Dutchman had no choice but to pull out of the proceedings.

Verstappen cut an angry figure on the team radio in the immediate aftermath, with the Red Bull star lashing out at 'f*****g idiots'.

Speaking to Sky, however, the 27-year-old has now expressed a belief that he's merely 'unlucky'.

He said: “It’s just unlucky, like yesterday in qualifying.

“But overall, we didn’t really have that great pace anyway this weekend, so a lot of learning for us how we can hopefully do better next weekend. But of course, not an ideal result today.”

Verstappen now finds himself 61 points adrift of Oscar Piastri in the race for the F1 title.

When quizzed on his current position, he added: "We try to do our best, always. My mentality doesn't change.

"We’ve won a lot in the past. Sometimes you have to accept that you are not winning, and we just try to do the best that we can.

“Hopefully then people will not mention it [his title chances] too much anymore.”

While it was a disappointing day for Verstappen, it was another afternoon for Norris to remember.

The McLaren star, reacting to his win, stated: "It was a tough race. Pushing the whole way through!

"Tricky, hot, tiring, but the perfect result for us as a team. A one-two is exactly what we want and we did it again, so I'm very happy.

"We [Norris and team-mate Piastri] had a great battle, that's for sure! It was a lot of fun.

"For me, a lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar.

"Hopefully it was a nice one for everyone to watch, but inside the car it was tough, especially when he was in DRS.

"The DRS is so big around here, so it was hard to get him out of the gap.

"Once I did, I could manage things pretty well but he was still quick."

Piastri, meanwhile, added: "It was intense. I hope it was good watching because it was pretty hard work from the car.

"I tried my absolute best. I probably could have done a better job when I just got ahead momentarily. But it was a good battle. A bit on the edge at times, and probably pushed the limits a bit far.

"It was a good race. That's what we're here to do - to try to race each other and fight for wins. That's what we did today. It was close for me but not quite enough.

"Thanks to the team. To have the kind of pace we did whilst battling each other, it was very impressive. I can't thank the team enough for the car we've got."
