The pair had both received separate invitations to the actress's exclusive bash but found themselves dining together with mutual friends at Matsuhisa restaurant earlier that evening.
It was during this meal that the Formula One champion and reality television star reconnected before attending the A-list party as a duo.
An insider told The Sun: "Kim and Lewis started speaking about meeting up after reconnecting at Kate Hudson's New Year's Eve party."

The exclusive venue in Witney offered the pair complete privacy for their much-anticipated weekend escape.
Kardashian touched down in Britain on Saturday afternoon, having travelled from Los Angeles aboard her £100million private jet.

The billionaire media mogul arrived at the Cotswolds estate laden with an extensive collection of luggage for what would be a brief stay.
Hamilton joined her at the country house roughly an hour after her arrival, having made his own dramatic entrance via helicopter from London's Battersea heliport.
The couple were accompanied by a substantial security detail, with three bodyguards assigned to protect them throughout their romantic getaway.
Two of Kardashian's personal protection officers accompanied her, whilst Hamilton brought his own close protection officer.
The pair were granted exclusive access to the upmarket spa facilities at the country club, allowing them to enjoy the amenities without interruption from other guests.

A source told The Sun: "It all appeared to be very romantic. Kim and Lewis made use of all the facilities on offer."
Their security team maintained a discreet presence throughout the evening, with two of the three bodyguards positioning themselves outside the door to the couple's room to ensure they remained undisturbed during their romantic retreat.
Hamilton was previously pictured with Kardashian in 2015 while she was in a relationship with rapper Kayne West. They were, however, just friends at the time.
