The Three Lions lost by eight wickets in Perth

Ben Stokes has admitted he feels 'shellshocked' after England crashed to a nightmare eight-wicket defeat against Australia on Saturday.

The Three Lions had gone into the second day feeling optimistic but, after posting just 164 in their second innings, ended up losing emphatically following a sublime century from Australian batsman Travis Head.

It was a disappointing day for Stokes individually, with the 34-year-old struggling with both bat and ball.

None of his teammates really made an impact, either, with Australia now 1-0 up with four Test matches to go.

And Stokes has now expressed his shock, with the England star hailing Head for his century and admitting that he has regrets over how the fixture was managed.

"I am little bit shellshocked. That innings from Head was pretty phenomenal and knocked the wind out of us," stated the Three Lions skipper.

"[The feelings] are quite raw and fresh at the moment.

"The way the game went, the guys that seemed to have success with bat in hand were the ones that were brave and took the game on.

"I suppose looking back it might be a case of 'on wickets like this, you never have enough and try to push on if you get in'.

"There was assistance for bowlers when they put the ball in the right area but batters who knocked bowlers off their length found success.

"We tried three or four different plans to Head but when he is going like a train those plans can change quickly. He can be hard to stop."

Stokes had helped England take control of the Test with a stunning five-wicket haul.

There was to be no repeat on Saturday, however, with the tourists set to regroup and go again when the second Test starts in Brisbane on December 4.

Stokes, looking ahead, said: "The way we bowled yesterday was phenomenal, so this is a tough result to take when we felt we were in control of the game.

"We have four more games so we need to get our heads around this and move on to Brisbane and hit the ground running.

"There is a long time before that game [from December 4] so we will put the hard graft in like we always do."

While it was a nightmare day for England, however, it was a moment for Australia to remember.

Their own media had started to turn on them after day one but, with Head leading from the front, they were able to turn things around.

The Australian batsman reacted to his blistering 123 by saying: "I don't think you can (sum it up), can you?

"It's a good start. It's been a tough two days. They're a serious good outfit.

"Starcy (Mitchell Starc led us) and we couldn't let that slip after his 7-58. It's nice to contribute.

"I was happy to do it (open) - it doesn't bother me too much. Nice to be able to do the role - it was needed today and I thought Weathers (Weatherald) played beautifully, so it was a good start)."
