The Gypsy King was among the mourners to attend Friday's service at Manchester Cathedral

When Tyson Fury arrived at Ricky Hatton’s funeral on Friday, his choice of outfit immediately caught the eye.

The heavyweight champion wore a bright, patterned suit covered entirely in images of himself, leaving fans baffled as a result.

To many it seemed a bizarre fashion statement for such a solemn occasion, but Fury’s decision was far more personal than it first appeared.

The colourful attire, featuring dozens of portraits of the Gypsy King in various poses, was not a display of ego but a quiet tribute to his late friend.

It echoed a moment from 2020 when Hatton had playfully mocked Fury’s eccentric wardrobe on social media.

During a live TNT Sports broadcast that year, Fury had appeared in a silver suit decorated with pictures of famous boxers.

Watching from a bar, Hatton filmed the screen and could barely contain his laughter as he shared a message to his followers.

“Tyson, what are you doing with that suit on?” he said through fits of giggles. “I remember when David Haye used to wear s*** suits, but now you’ve overtaken him, oh my God!”

Fury never forgot the joke, and five years later, his outfit at Hatton’s funeral appeared to be a heartfelt nod to that shared moment.

Those close to both men said the suit reflected their friendship and mischievous humour — a way for Fury to bring a touch of colour and laughter to a day heavy with grief.

Friday's funeral, held nearly a month after Hatton was found dead at his home aged 46, drew thousands of mourners from across Manchester and beyond.

The procession began in Hyde, the town where Hatton grew up, before passing through landmarks deeply connected to his life and career.

The cortege stopped at the Cheshire Cheese pub, his local, before continuing past the New Inn, once run by his parents, where doves were released in his honour.

From there, it travelled to the AO Arena, formerly the M.E.N. Arena, where Hatton enjoyed some of the most memorable nights of his career, including his famous 2005 victory over Kostya Tszyu.

The route concluded at Manchester Cathedral, where family, friends and many of boxing’s biggest names gathered for a private service.

As the hearse made its way through the streets, thousands of fans lined the pavements to pay their final respects, applauding and waving flags as a brass band played “Walking in a Hatton Wonderland,” the song that had become synonymous with the former world champion’s ring entrances.

Inside the cathedral, tributes were led by those who knew Hatton best — former opponents, friends, and fellow fighters who spoke of his generosity, humour and deep connection to the city that adored him.

Among them was Fury, whose flamboyant suit stood as a reminder that Hatton’s legacy was not only about titles and triumphs, but about the warmth and laughter he brought to those around him.
