A pyramid-shaped formation spotted on the surface of Mars has reignited speculation about whether an ancient civilisation once existed on the Red Planet.
Online discussion has surged after a viral post shared Nasa footage appearing to show a triangular structure.
The feature was first identified in 2001 by researcher Keith Laney while examining images from Nasa's Mars Global Surveyor mission.
He had been scanning the footage for unusual formations when he came across what he believes could be an artificially constructed object.

"Were this found anywhere on Earth, we'd surely be digging into it," Mr Laney told the Daily Mail last year.
Interest in the discovery has recently been revived by documentary maker Brian Dobbs, who reshared the footage.
"On Mars, there is a three-sided pyramid the size of the Great Pyramid in Egypt," Mr Dobbs claimed.
The filmmaker acknowledged the structure is not proof of extraterrestrial life, but said it raises questions about whether another species may once have inhabited Mars.

The formation lies in the western region of Candor Chasma - one of the largest canyons within Valles Marineris.
The vast canyon system is the second largest in the solar system.
Scientists say the area’s steep cliffs, landslides and layered rock formations can naturally produce geometric-looking features.

Researchers noted the structure maintained a consistent three-sided symmetry across all images, despite differences in lighting, quality and seasonal conditions.
Mars researcher George Haas backed Mr Laney’s claims about the mysterious three-sided structure.
"You don't have to be a geologist to know the difference between a rock and a sculpture, something that's geometric," he explained.
Mr Laney later doubled down, declaring the pyramid is "most definitely artificial".

Adding to the intrigue, CIA documents released at the end of 2025 revealed the agency had conducted unusual experiments aimed at gathering information about Mars.
The programme, known as 'Project Stargate,' allegedly involved sending a participant’s consciousness backwards in time using astral projection.
Former CIA operative Joe McMoneagle also claimed similar experiments identified pyramid-like structures elsewhere on Mars.
Mr McMoneagle described a pyramid larger than those in Egypt, containing what he called 'monster rooms.'
The true nature of the formation remains impossible to confirm without a mission to Mars - but that has done little to curb growing speculation about its origins.
