Buckingham Palace have bid farewell to a cherished member of the royal household in a touching message.

Tyrone, a 19-year-old Windsor Grey horse who pulled royal carriages during some of the monarchy's most significant occasions, has retired after a decade and a half of "noble service".

The horse concluded his ceremonial duties following French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit in May 2025.

Standing at 18 hands, or 6 feet tall, Buckingham Palace described Tyrone as a "gentle and dependable giant" in their farewell message.

The Palace wrote: "After 14 years of noble service with the Royal Mews, we are celebrating Tyrone and wishing him a happy retirement!"

Last week, Tyrone departed the Royal Mews for permanent residence at the Horse Trust sanctuary in Buckinghamshire.

He has now been reunited with his 26-year-old father Storm and 20-year-old sister Meg, both former royal carriage horses now residing at the Chiltern Hills sanctuary.

"All three horse were very dear to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the post informed touchingly.

The message concluded sweetly: "Tyrone will be missed by everyone at the Royal Mews, but it’s wonderful that he’ll be reunited with his father and sister. Thank you, Tyrone!"

Buckingham Palace's tribute also featured a carousel of images of Tyrone and information about his most important duties.

Throughout his career, the Irish draught horse participated in the monarchy's most prestigious ceremonies.

He drew the Diamond Jubilee State Coach that transported King Charles and Queen Camilla from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey for the 2023 coronation.

He later pulled the Gold State Coach for their return journey.

In June 2024, Tyrone was entrusted with leading the Prince Kate and her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, in the Glass State Coach during Trooping the Colour.

His distinguished service began with Queen Elizabeth II's 2012 state opening of parliament and included Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding procession.

Tyrone would most often serve as “wheeler" when pulling carriages.

This demanding task required heavy pulling work whilst maintaining impeccable behaviour before large, noisy crowds.

Windsor Greys have long drawn the sovereign's state coaches for major events including coronations, state visits, Trooping the Colour, Royal Ascot and royal weddings since Queen Victoria's era.

Rather than a breed, Greys are a ceremonial classification rather referencing their off-white coats, temperament, strength and appearance.

On Monday, Tyrone was delivered to his new home, where approximately 120 horses, ponies and mules reside, The Sunday Times reported.

The Horse Trust is funded through private donations and legacies and counts the Princess Royal as its patron.
