The Dutch heir to the throne has been hospitalised following a riding accident that left her with a broken upper arm bone.

Princess Catharina-Amalia, 21, was transported to a hospital in Utrecht after falling from her horse earlier today.

Medical staff at UMC Utrecht are preparing to operate on the princess, who suffered a fracture to an upper arm bone in the fall.

The Dutch royal house has confirmed the incident but stated that the effect on her forthcoming official engagements remains uncertain, with further information to be provided as the situation develops.

Queen Máxima received notification of her daughter's accident whilst attending a mental health conference at the Palace, according to Dutch royal journalist Rick Evers.

He reported on social media that the princess had broken her upper arm after falling from her horse and would require surgical intervention at UMC Utrecht.

The 21-year-old princess has been an enthusiastic rider for many years, making today's accident particularly unexpected.

Medical teams at the Utrecht hospital are now preparing for the operation, though no timeline has been provided for her recovery or when she might resume royal duties.

Princess Amalia's passion for horse riding has been a constant throughout her life, despite the challenges she has faced in recent years.

Her university education was significantly disrupted when she was forced to abandon her studies in the Netherlands due to security threats against her.

The princess subsequently relocated to Spain, where she was able to continue her courses with greater personal freedom and safety.

This period of exile from her homeland marked a difficult chapter for the young royal, who had hoped to experience a normal student life in her own country.

Princess Amalia became heir to the Dutch throne in April 2013 when her father ascended as King Willem-Alexander.

The Princess of Orange has held this position for over a decade, preparing for her future role as monarch whilst completing her education.

The royal household has indicated that the full impact of today's accident on her official diary remains to be determined.

Further updates regarding her condition and any adjustments to her scheduled appearances are expected to be released as more information becomes available following the surgery at UMC Utrecht.
