The Princess Royal is known for her no-nonsense approach to her royal duties and the outfits she undertakes them in

Princess Anne has been praised for “pushing boundaries” with a significant image update while attending the Order of the Garter procession at Windsor Castle on Monday.

The 74-year-old Princess Royal walked alongside her nephew, Prince William, in full military regalia, complete with a distinctive white feather that bloomed prominently from her hat.

Anne was appointed as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter in 1994.

However, the Princess broke from her established understated approach to cosmetics and chose to wear an eye-catching pink metallic lipstick for the prestigious event.

Otherwise, the Princess Royal sported the distinctive white plumed hats and dark blue velvet robes.

She accessorised the outfit with pearl earrings.

"Reimagining classic lipstick colours such as red or pink as sparkling focal points is great for special occasions,” HELLO! Magazine’s Acting Head of Beauty, Cassie Steer said.

“A metallic mouth (not to be confused with more sedate shimmer) adds a modern lustre.

She observed: “Leave it to Anne to push beauty boundaries in the chicest of ways."

The Princess Royal's formal military dress stood in marked contrast to the summer attire chosen by other royal women at the ceremony.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, opted for a pale pink ensemble.

Meanwhile, Princess Kate wore a cream Tailored Boucle and Chiffon Midi Dress form the brand Self Portrait, which she paired with a Sean Barrett hat.

The 43-year-old accessorised with her faux pearl necklace designed by Susan Caplan.

Kate’s outfit impressed eagle eyed royal fans who spotted she had worn an almost identical ensemble during May’s VE Day celebrations but added a subtle twist.

The Princess of Wales and Sophie stood under a canopy at the Galilee Porch entrance to the chapel, emerging at least 10 minutes before the procession began.

As the Military Knights of Windsor led the procession past them, the Princess and the Duchess appeared particularly amused by something, giggling together as they watched the colourful display.

King Charles, as Sovereign of the Garter, lead senior royals and twenty-four knights chosen for their contributions.

Hundreds of spectators, many sheltering from the heat with straw hats and parasols, cheered as the party slowly progressed through the grounds.

The Order of the Garter was founded by King Edward III in 1348, making it the oldest order of chivalry in the UK.

The annual parade sees members of the Royal Family travel to Windsor to attend a service in St George's Chapel and take part in a procession around the grounds.
