The comment came during an exchange with charity marathon runners

Princess Anne has declared she will never run a marathon, despite being remarkably fit at the age of 74.

The Princess Royal made the candid admission while attending the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the season on Wednesday.

Her comment came during a light-hearted exchange with charity marathon runners dressed as giant ovaries.

The garden party saw thousands of guests enjoying tea and sandwiches on the Palace lawn, with several members of the Royal family in attendance despite threatening rain clouds.

Princess Anne was visibly amused when shown photographs of "Mr and Mrs Ovary", friends who participate in marathons dressed as giant reproductive organs.

"Do you run around like that?" the Princess asked with a laugh. "Good of you not to turn up like that."

The marathon runners, Craig McMurrough, 54, and Sarah Temple, 49, were delighted by the royal's reaction.

McMurrough later told the Telegraph: "She couldn't believe we run in those outfits and she said, 'You won't get me running a marathon'."

The pair have raised more than £100,000 for the charity Ovacome, which supports women diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Their fundraising efforts began after McMurrough's sister Cheryl Earnshaw died from the disease in 2016, aged just 43.

Earnshaw, a mother of two, inspired her brother and his friend to take on marathons across the UK and overseas in their distinctive ovary costumes.

Princess Anne was joined at the garden party by the King and Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

The King wore a traditional top hat and tails for the occasion, paired with an eye-catching pale blue waistcoat and matching pocket handkerchief.

The Queen opted for a teal blue crepe silk dress with a cream lace inset by Christian Dior, complemented by a Philip Treacy hat and a turquoise and diamond brooch.

The Royal Family emerged from the Palace together for the National Anthem before greeting guests.

Guests at the garden party enjoyed a selection of cakes, sandwiches and tea, followed by ice cream.

Musical entertainment was provided by bands from the Welsh Guards and the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre.

They performed tunes from popular shows including Oliver!, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera.

Garden party attendees typically consume more than 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 cakes.

The Palace will host its first garden party recognising those working in the education sector next Wednesday.
