The baker admitted the cake 'would have collapsed' from her mistake

Royal baker Juliet Sear has admitted she made a "schoolboy error", which led to a "very hairy" moment for Prince William.

The Prince of Wales visited the homeless charity Centrepoint's new London headquarters to mark 20 years as patron, in which she cut a three-tiered chocolate cake.

William did not realise, though, how close he was to a catastrophe.

Mrs Sear explained to The Daily Mail: "I made a schoolboy error and didn't actually dowel the cake in the middle, so it would have collapsed."

Fortunately for her, there was still time to correct the initial mistake.

She said: "Luckily, I always give extra time to setting up the cake, so I had time to phone up [her assistant] who found all my dowels, my hacksaw, and brought them to me so I could dowel."

Aside from the cake, the Prince of Wales worked alongside staff members and young people who have benefited from Centrepoint's support.

He collaborated on a new artwork called the "Wall of Hope," a mural created by young people alongside artist Lanre Olagoke MBE.

The finished piece will celebrate the organisation's history and commitment to eliminating homelessness among young people.

The patronage represents one of William's longest charitable commitments, inherited from his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who first took on the role in 1992.

The mural's co-creator, Lanre Olagoke, is a self-taught artist with personal experience of homelessness.

He was awarded an MBE in the King's New Year's Honours in 2024 for his efforts in providing artistic opportunities to young people.

The visit also marked William's continued engagement with the charity, having attended one of its services earlier this year in January.

Research published by Centrepoint in November revealed that around 23,500 young people could experience homelessness during the winter months.

The charity's helpline achieved a significant milestone in October by assisting its 50,000th caller, less than eight years after William officially launched the service.

Centrepoint has become a key partner in the Prince's Homewards initiative, providing advice to The Royal Foundation on the programme's design and offering ongoing guidance as it develops.

William is planning on taking his son, Prince George, to help the homeless as the future king takes notes from his mother.

When William was just 11 years old, Diana took him to a shelter, which was the catalyst for his support for the homeless.

As revealed by the Mail on Sunday, a royal source said: "He talks to George, Charlotte and Louis about homelessness a lot. It's something he's incredibly passionate about.

"He's keen to take George to a homeless shelter soon to meet some of the brilliant people who inspired him to create Homewards, and the people who will ultimately be supported by it."
