The Liverpool star and his sibling died in a car crash in Spain this morning

Prince William has paid tribute to Liverpool FC footballer Diogo Jota and his brother, who both died in a car crash in Spain this morning.

The Prince of Wales, as patron of the Football Association, took to social media with a statement following the tragic news.

Prince William, 43, said: "As part of the footballing family, I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him @LFC@Wolves. W".

The "W" indicates the post was written directly by the future King on the social media account he shares with his wife, Princess Kate.

Spain's Guardia Civil released a statement explaining Jota's car crash after the Liverpool star died at the age of 28 in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Portugal international was travelling in the province of Zamora, Spain, when the car came off the road shortly after midnight.

Tragically, both Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed following the tragic accident.

The news has left the footballing community shocked and saddened, with figures such as Jamie Carragher and Cristiano Ronaldo paying tribute.

Now, Spain's Guardia Civil has released a statement confirming there was a "tyre blockout while overtaking".

They told the BBC: "The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

"It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.

"The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed."

The tragedy is made even sadder due to Jota recently marrying long-term partner Rute Cardoso.

The couple, who have three children together, tied the knot at the end of June.

Hauntingly, Jota's final social media post was a video from their special day. He accompanied his upload with a caption that read: "A day we will never forget."
