The Duke of Sussex is in Dusseldorf for the Invictus Games

Prince Harry made the “cardinal sin” of getting trounced in a penalty shootout against a German during his trip to the country.

The Duke of Sussex is in Dusseldorf for the Invictus Games, where he took on German defence minister Boris Pistorius in a live TV competition.

Harry, 38, continued England’s disappointing record against Germany in penalty shootouts, with the country suffering crushing defeats to their rivals in the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1996.

The Duke’s efforts were mocked by royal expert Phil Dampier, who told GB News that he had committed a “cardinal sin” with his failure.

“I’m not going to criticise him for the Invictus Games, but he did commit the cardinal son of losing to the Germans”, he said on GB News.

“I think he should concentrate on watching Lionel Messi and not trying to be Lionel Messi.”

Harry’s failure was broadcast to the world on Das Aktuelles Sportstudio programme on ZDF.

His total of six efforts from the spot yielded no goals in a poor effort from the Duke.

After being told that he would have to wear a German national team jersey should he lose, it became clear that such a scenario had not been prepared for.

Harry instead was forced to don a Mainz 05 scarf, earning a round of applause and a loud cheer in the process.

The Invictus Games sees hundreds of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women from 21 countries competing against each other in a series of sporting events.

The event kicked off on Saturday evening with an opening ceremony at the Merkur Arena.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Duke revealed that his wife, Meghan Markle, would be cheering on Nigeria, having recently discovered that she was of Nigerian descent.

The Duchess revealed on her Archetypes podcast last October that she was “43 per cent Nigerian”.

After welcoming Colombia, Israel and Nigeria to the competition, Harry said: “Now, I’m not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered that she’s of Nigerian descent it’s likely to get a little bit competitive this year.”

The Duke’s public appearances have been met with much fanfare in Germany, where he was spotted fist-bumping spectators and playfully tugging the beard of a Canadian fan.
