A significant figure in Prince Harry's Invictus Games Foundation is departing after 10 years of dedicated service, ahead of the sporting event's return to the UK in 2027.

Mickaela Richards, who competed in the inaugural 2014 London Games before becoming a key executive, will be leaving her position as Grants and Programmes Director.

The Foundation announced Richards' departure with a formal farewell statement, acknowledging her decade-long commitment to supporting wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.

Her unique perspective as both a former competitor and senior staff member has shaped the organisation's approach to using sport for recovery and rehabilitation.

Richards played a pivotal role in expanding the Foundation's reach beyond the Games themselves.

Her most notable achievement was spearheading the creation of We Are Invictus, an online community platform designed to connect and support the international veteran community.

The Foundation's statement highlighted that "her commitment to using the power of sport and adventurous challenge for the recovery of her peers led to the development of We Are Invictus, our online community hub and platform."

This digital initiative has become a cornerstone of the organisation's year-round programming, providing continuous support to service personnel between the biennial Games.

Rob Owen OBE, the Foundation's CEO, expressed mixed emotions about Richards' departure.

"We are saddened to see Mickaela go, and are immensely grateful for her contributions and commitment to our mission," he stated.

Owen acknowledged Richards' instrumental role in the organisation's success over the past decade.

"I look forward to growing what has been an incredible decade of changing lives and saving lives through the power of sport led by her and the team," he added.

The Foundation indicated it would continue building on Richards' legacy, with plans to expand support through international collaboration and community-building initiatives for those who have served.

Richards' departure comes as the Invictus Games prepare for their return to British soil. Birmingham will host the 2027 Games, marking the first UK event since Prince Harry launched the inaugural tournament in London in 2014.

The Birmingham bid succeeded against six international competitors, with the foundation praising the city's "strong commitment to the welfare and recovery" of serving personnel and veterans. The selection was finalised after Birmingham and Washington DC emerged as the two shortlisted cities.

The homecoming raises questions about whether King Charles, the Prince of Wales and other Royal Family members will attend to support the event founded by Prince Harry.
