Despite giving up his titles, Andrew will remain a prince as he is the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II

A York politician has made a crucial demand to Buckingham Palace when appointing future royal titles.

It comes after Prince Andrew has agreed to give up the use of his title as the Duke of York in light of "continued accusations" against him.

King Charles’s younger brother has said he will "put my duty to my family and country first" in a statement released by Buckingham Palace.

York Councillor, Darryl Smalley, who led the move to strip him of the freedom of the city, told GB News that local people should have some investment in royal titles named after the places they are from.

He said: "These titles are very important; whether it is the Duke of Sussex or the Duke of York, it actually matters that the local people have some sort of investment in a title."

"From our experience, what we really pleaded for is that time is taken to make sure, before an appointment is made, there is at least some engagement.

"That's not going to be a referendum or anything like that but get the local authories invoved, get the local MPs invoved, local civic leaders and religious leaders to have input to show that some effort by the Palace has been done to make sure the damage that has been done is restored when appointing the next Duke of York and that would be really welcomed."

Despite giving up his titles, Andrew will remain a prince as he is the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Speaking on whether the Duke of York title should be appointed to another member of the Royal Family, Mr Smalley said: "Our minds were immediately drawn to this question when we saw the news alert flash up on our phones. We thought, 'Okay, well, what happens next?'

"What needs to happen from York's experience, for the benefit of the monarchy and the benefit of the entire country, is more engagement around these types of titles."

Prince Andrew will also surrender his membership of the Order of the Garter.

Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the titles of Duke and Duchess of York upon Andrew and Sarah Ferguson as a wedding gift in 1986.

The royal became the eighth peer to hold the noble title, created in 1385 and traditionally granted to the second son of the British monarch.

The prince faced intense public scrutiny concerning his former relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Last weekend, reports emerged that claimed Prince Andrew told Jeffrey Epstein they were "in this together" the day after a picture of him with Virginia Giuffre was published in 2011.

Prince Andrew had previously said he severed all communication with the disgraced financier in December 2010.

However, the newly leaked correspondence appeared to show the duke writing to Epstein on February 28, 2011.

The friendship between the royal and convicted paedophile has led residents of York to continue to urge the Palace and Andrew to drop his association with York.

Before his statement announcing his decision to no longer use his title or the honours, GB News spoke to people in York on what they made of the King's brother.

One person asked: "We shouldn't be celebrating him in York in any shape or form."

Another passerby added: "His reputation taints the city, of course it does."

A third said: "The Duke of York has never lived in York. If there was a Duke of York, he should be from York and born in York."

Luke Charters, Labour MP for York Outer, told the People's Channel: "I hope the Royal Family consider the feelings of York residents on this issue."

GB News found that over 70 per cent of people in York believed that Prince Andrew should be stripped of his Duke of York title.

King Charles has the power to grant new royal titles, so it is possible the Duke of York title can be passed on to another member of the Royal Family.

Andrew continues to vigorously deny the accusations against him.

The statement read: "In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.

"With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further.

"I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.

"As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me."
