A York councillor has told GB News that the residents of York will be "pleased" following Prince Andrew agreeing to give up the use of his title as the Duke of York.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, King Charles’s younger brother said he will "put my duty to my family and country first".
His public popularity has plummeted following links to the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
As the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Andrew will remain a Prince.
Cllr Darryl Smalley, who led the move to strip him of the freedom of the city, told GB News that Buckingham Palace are "reflecting what public opinion seems to be in York."
He explained: "My inbox was full of people back when the first Newsnight interview aired. All local councillors' emails switched from potholes to Prince Andrew overnight.
"People were extremely miffed, but as an authority and a council, we had absolutely no power."
Mr Smalley revealed that York councillors were writing to Buckingham Palace in an attempt to persuade them to axe Andrew of the historic title.

He added: "I am pleased that the public mood has made the Palace act.
"Most people feel pretty miffed that we've had someone with allegations against him carrying our city's name for so many years.
Earlier this year, a GB News investigation found that over 70 per cent of people in York believe the prince should be stripped of the title.
The data, which was gathered from 100 people in the streets of York, also revealed that only eight per cent of adults asked believed Andrew should keep the historic royal title, while the other 21 per cent had no view.

| GETTYMr Smalley agreed that there was widespread demand for Andrew to be stripped of the title.
He added: "The interesting thing is when we voted to strip his freedom of the city, it was completely unanimous, which is unheard of in York.
"York is a very political city; it is extremely rare that everyone agrees with each other, but it was one of the first unanimous votes in a long time."
The York councillor told GB News that the issues transcended monarchists and republicans, explaining that there are people in York who are both overt monarchists and overt republicans.
He said: "We were very, very pleased to welcome King Charles to the city when he first ascended and that was a very important moment.
"This is not a city that is against the monarchy, but a city which is extremely proud of it. From my time in York politics, which is over a decade, this is the issue that has united everyone."
Mr Smalley added: "It’s obviously a long time coming, but finally they recognised what a massive liability he is."
Speaking on Andrew's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, Mr Smalley said: "The most important thing is that Epstein's victims get the justice they deserve."

Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, has called for legislation that would give King Charles new powers to remove royal titles.
She told GB News: "I have long called for the title of the Duke of York to be removed in the light that it carries an ambassadorial association with our city.
"York is England’s only UN Human Rights City and stands for a higher set of values and when polled, 80 per cent of York residents voted for the removal of the title."
"Having sought to change the law through my Removal of Titles Bill, I now think it is time for this legislation which provides the King new powers to be able to remove titles or for a grand committee of both Houses of Parliament to make a recommendation to the King to remove a title."
Currently, forcefully removing Andrew's dukedom would require an act of parliament if the King's brother did not agree to voluntarily give it up.

A statement released by Prince Andrew on Friday said: "In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family."
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.
"With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me."
Andrew highlighted that he continues to deny the accusations against him.
