The reaction has been described as unfair and unwarranted

Those close to Meghan Markle were left furious over claims that her recent Instagram post from Paris was intended to reference the late Diana, Princess of Wales, GB News understands.

The Duchess of Sussex shared a short video on social media over the weekend showing the illuminated streets of Paris from the back of a moving car.

The clip, which appeared on her official Instagram account, was posted shortly after her surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week, where she attended Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2026 show.

Online speculation arose over the video’s location, with some commentators suggesting it was filmed near the Pont de l’Alma tunnel — the site of the 1997 crash that killed Diana, Princess of Wales.

The footage quickly drew attention on social media, with users debating whether the post was a deliberate nod to the late royal.

However, GB News understands that those close to the Duchess were angered by the suggestion that there was any hidden meaning or symbolism behind the video.

The reaction has been described as unfair and unwarranted, with Meghan's camp insisting the post was simply a snapshot of a Parisian evening shared during the Duchess’s first European visit in two years.

The mother-of-two travelled to France to support her longtime friend Pierpaolo Piccioli, who recently became creative director of Balenciaga.

She attended the brand’s runway show in an all-white custom Balenciaga outfit, featuring a silk shirt, wide-leg trousers and a floor-length cape.

Later that evening, she changed into a black backless gown by the same designer for dinner in the city.

A statement from her team following the show said the Duchess had “long admired” Mr Piccioli’s craftsmanship and modern elegance, describing her attendance as a show of support for his new chapter at the fashion house.

The pair have collaborated on several occasions, with the Duchess previously wearing Mr Piccioli’s designs during her time as a working royal.

During her brief trip, the Duchess was accompanied by her close friend, Markus Anderson, the global membership director of Soho House.

The pair were seen arriving together at the Balenciaga show on Saturday before joining other guests for the after-show dinner.

The appearance marked Meghan's first visit to Europe since attending the Invictus Games in Germany in 2023, a sports tournament founded by Prince Harry.

Her social media presence also continues to draw significant public attention since the launch of her lifestyle brand, As Ever, earlier this year.

While the reaction to her Paris post gained traction online, Meghan's camp maintains that the Duchess was simply sharing moments from her evening in the city.

Those close to her have dismissed the speculation as exaggerated and misleading, stressing that the footage reflected nothing more than the lights of Paris on a Saturday night.
