Republic regularly hold demonstrations in favour of abolishing the Royal Family

Anti-monarchy group Republic are staging a protest during Trooping the Colour celebrations for King Charles’s official birthday today.

Saturday’s proceedings will see Charles receive a salute from Britain’s armed forces as proceeds from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade and back again.

The King and senior members of the Royal Family will then take to the Buckingham Palace balcony to wave to fans and observe an RAF flypast.

Protesters from Republic have been gathering on The Mall since 6am on Saturday morning to make their voices heard during the celebrations.

Republic’s official X account shared images of their nascent presence before the Buckingham Palace.

"Our Trooping the Colour protest is growing - next up, Charles’s arrival… #NotMyKing#AbolishTheMonarchy," they wrote this morning at 9:30am.

Ahead of their demonstration, the anti-monarchy group issued a press release in Republic CEO Graham Smith outlined their complaints.

The statement compared the event to a parade also being held on Saturday by President Donald Trump to mark the US Army’s 250th anniversary in Washington DC, which coincidentally also falls on his birthday.

US citizens have very real concerns about Trump's actions and his military parade. Here in the UK we have the real deal, a king who dresses up in unearned uniforms and medals and insists on a huge military parade through London,” Republic’s statement began.

They slammed: "Trooping the Colour is the key iconic royal event of the year. From now on there will be protesters there, calling out the event and the monarchy as a superficial cover for a grubby and corrupt institution.”

Republic specifically took issue with the military nature of the proceedings in London and the ranks held by King Charles, Prince William, Prince Edward and Princess Anne in the armed forced.

"Charles does not qualify for any of the medals he wears. He has not earned the ranks he wears, he was promoted in all the services as birthday presents from his mum.

"Edward and Anne haven't served a day in the armed forces, yet they too dress up. Their behaviour is an insult to the bravery of our military.

"That's why Republic has hundreds of military veterans within our membership, people who have been willing to defend country, not king,” the press release said.

Despite their claims, King Charles followed a royal tradition in serving in the navy during his youth – being stationed on various vessels and flying helicopters in the 1970s.

His son, Prince William, served in the Army with the Blues and Royals and as an RAF search and rescue pilot in which he conducted 156 operations.

The King's brother, Prince Edward, also spent three years in the Royal Marines as a University Cadet.

Republic’s stinging address concluded with the credo: "Support for the monarchy is falling, and protests will continue at all major royal events until it has been abolished."

Republic recently made their voices heard as King Charles visited Lancaster Castle to take part in an ancient ceremony in front of John O'Gaunt gate last week.

Speaking to GB News, Smith told Royal Correspondent Cameron Walker that the King "definitely knows" of their protest, claiming the monarch "looked out the window at us as his car drove past".
