James Middleton was left stunned during a Good Morning Britain interview when host Susanna Reid brazenly admitted she had "barely listened to a word" he said.

The Princess of Wales's brother appeared on Wednesday's ITV programme alongside presenters Reid and Ed Balls.

James also brought his dogs Inka and Isla with him.

He was discussing his late dog Ella and her role in helping him through mental health struggles when the awkward moment occurred.

Reid became visibly distracted by Inka, who was sitting playfully beside her on the sofa.

During the serious conversation about mental health, Reid petted and laughed as Inka licked her face while James continued speaking about his close relationship with his late pet.

He had explained: "When I was really struggling, Ella was the one who was able to step in and really help me and she was doing it consciously.

"I truly believe she was consciously knowledgeable about how she was helping me."

At one point, Reid candidly confessed: "I've barely listened to a word you have said."

She explained: "I am in the moment with Inka, that unfortunately means that I'm not in the moment with anyone else."

James and Ed Balls laughed in response to Reid's admission, and the conversation continued with a discussion about the benefits of dogs in various settings.

The Princess of Wales's brother went on to explain: "Dogs improve prod in the workplace so I think if you can't have a dog in the workplace you should be encouraged to bring it because they do improve, increase productivity."

He acknowledged the irony of the situation, adding: "Although they are a distraction."

The comment came as Reid's own distraction by Inka had just demonstrated his point during the live television interview.
