Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was chosen instead of the US President

The White House has accused the Nobel Committee of placing "politics over peace" after Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was chosen for the honour instead of US President Donald Trump.

White House Director of Communication Steven Cheung said: "The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace."

The committee announced Ms Machado as the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 winner on Friday.

She was honoured for her "tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy", Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Jorgen Watne Frydnes said in Oslo.

The decision came after Israeli's military declared the Gaza ceasefire agreement had come into effect.

It followed a vote in its cabinet on Thursday night.

Mr Trump's name was thrown around in recent weeks as a potential recipient of the prestigious award, but he did not make the final cut.

"President Trump will continue making peace deals around the world, ending wars, and saving lives," Mr Cheung added.

"He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will."

In the lead up to the announcement, Mr Trump had pitched himself as a peacemaker.

He, on many occasions, claimed he had ended a number of wars.

The US President has for years pushed for selection, saying "many people" thought he had earned it.

Speculation over whether Mr Trump would win the award came after he brokered the historic peace agreement between Hamas and Israel.

It appears to have put an end to two-years of bloodshed in Gaza.

Both sides have agreed to the first phase of the deal to pause fighting and release the hostages captured by Hamas during their shocking terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Nobel Peace Committee's Chairman was questioned by reporters about Mr Trump's campaign to win the award.

Mr Frydnes said: "In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, this committee has seen (every) type of campaign".

"We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year, of people wanting to say what, for them, leads to peace," he added.

The chairman said the committee room is "filled with courage and integrity" when deciding.

"We base our decision only on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel," Mr Frydnes said.

He further said that Ms Machado was considered a "key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided - an opposition that found common ground in the demand for free elections and representative government".

"In the past year, Ms Machado has been forced to live in hiding," Mr Frydnes said.

"Despite serious threats against her life, she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions.

"When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist."
