Marjorie Taylor Greene said ‘loyalty should be a two-way street’ in a final jab at President Donald Trump

Former Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced she will step down from Congress following a public spat with the US President over the release of the Epstein files.

Ms Greene, who has represented Georgia's 14th district since 2021, confirmed on social media that she will be stepping down from her post on January 5.

The announcement came just days after the public feud with the President, which saw Mr Trump withdraw his endorsement of Ms Greene and say he would back a primary challenge against her in next year’s midterms.

The Republican congresswoman had been one of the leading voices calling for the release of all Department of Justice files relating to Epstein.

The President launched an attack on Ms Greene on his Truth Social platform last week, where he labelled her as a "traitor", "wacky", and a "ranting lunatic", before saying all she does is "complain, complain, complain".

The Georgia representative told CNN on Sunday that she strongly disagreed with the White House’s failure to disclose the entirety of the files.

She added that his comments about her personally were "so extremely wrong" and that "the types of words used that can radicalise people against me and put my life in danger".

In a statement posted on social media, Ms Greene wrote: "Americans are used by the Political Industrial Complex of both political parties, election cycle after election cycle, in order to elect whichever side can convince Americans to hate the other side more.

"No matter which way the political pendulum swings, Republican or Democrat, nothing ever gets better for the common American man or woman.

"Standing up for American women who were raped at 14 years old, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States whom I fought for.

"I have too much self-respect and dignity. I love my family way too much and I do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President that we all fought for only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms and in turn be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.

"I look forward to a new path ahead."

Ms Greene has been one of the most prominent "America First" figures in Congress since she took office five years ago.

However, in recent months, the Georgia representative has become increasingly critical of the President and other Republican politicians.

In June, Ms Greene heavily criticised the decision for the US to carry out missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

At the time, she said: “I’ve watched our country go to war in foreign lands for foreign causes on behalf of foreign interests for as long as I can remember.

"American troops have been killed and forever torn apart physically and mentally for regime change, foreign wars, and for military industrial base profits. I’m sick of it.”

Republican Thomas Massie, who co-sponsored the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which passed both houses earlier this week, said her resignation was "very sad for our country".

He wrote: "She embodies what a true Representative should be.

"Everyone should read her statement; there’s more honesty expressed in these four pages than most politicians will speak in a lifetime."

Mr Trump is yet to comment publicly on Ms Greene's resignation.
