'What are the motives?!' Bev Turner says Donald Trump is facing ‘huge mountain’ to secure Greenland

Mr Trump has argued that the United States must take control of Greenland on national security grounds, refusing to rule out the use of military force.

The proposal has been firmly dismissed by Greenland’s leadership and by Denmark, a Nato ally, which retains sovereignty over the semi-autonomous territory.

The standoff has since escalated into a diplomatic dispute, with the US President warning he could impose further trade tariffs on European allies, including the UK, who refuse to back the plan.

Explaining on GB News, Bev said: "Now, just to put a little flesh on the bones regarding Greenland, it’s a hugely important resource because of its rare earth minerals.

"While the West has been napping, African countries have had many of their rare earth minerals bought up by China and, to a lesser extent, Russia.

"These minerals are essential for the green agenda, solar panels, wind turbines, electric cars and both America and the UK have been caught off guard.

"One of the last bastions of these minerals is actually Greenland, which is one of the reasons why the US wants access to the country.

"I think part of the communication problem is that Trump could, of course, cooperate with Greenland and Denmark to make this happen.

"But the language used so far has been so violent and imperialistic that it’s losing support.

"From a security point of view, Greenland is also critical. It sits on the naval pinch point between the UK, Iceland, and Greenland a route Russian submarines would have to pass to reach mainland Europe.

"Additionally, as the ice melts due to global warming, the area is becoming more accessible.

"If Russia were to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile toward Europe, the UK, or the US, Greenland would be the first to detect it.

"Trump has so far struggled to convey these motives clearly.

"The key sticking point is that Greenlanders would have to approve any such arrangement under European, Nato, and UN rules: frameworks that President Trump has historically shown little respect for.

"The latest polling shows that 85 per cent of Greenlanders do not want to come under American control.

"He is using every tool at his disposal, including tariffs, to try to persuade European allies to support him.

"But it will be a long and difficult road, and he faces a “huge mountain” to climb this week if he hopes to convince European leaders at Davos."
