Donald Trump has described JD Vance and Marco Rubio as a "dream team" for the White House, but refused to endorse a direct successor.
The comments come as the US President invited guests at a White House Rose Garden dinner to clap for either man in an ad hoc popularity contest.
President Trump said there were “a lot of beauties out there, JD".
He added: "I envy you and other people, I don’t know. Who is it going to be? Is it going to be JD? Is it going to be somebody else? I don’t know."
Mr Trump invited people to express their views.
He added: “OK, let's go, are you ready? Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio?"
The President said: "All right, sounds like a good ticket. That was a perfect ticket.
"By the way, I do believe that’s a dream team, but these are minor details. That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance."

He continued: "I think it sounds like presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate."
The Twenty-second Amendment of the US Constitution explicitly bars any person from being elected to the presidency more than twice, meaning President Trump cannot remain in the White House after 2028.
The mandate applies regardless of whether the two terms were served consecutively or non-consecutively.
Despite loopholes being presented to President Trump suggesting he could run as Vice President, he has publicly ruled this out, calling the strategy "too cute" and "not right".
