Taylor Harwood-Bellis found himself in the spotlight during Southampton's victory over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night

Taylor Harwood-Bellis is expected to avoid disciplinary action after Luke Ayling informed the The Football Association that he did not wish to pursue a complaint arising from Tuesday night's heated Championship play-off clash.

The Southampton defender had been accused of making a remark referencing Ayling's speech impediment during his side's dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Middlesbrough at St Mary's.

The incident sparked a furious confrontation involving players, coaching staff and both managers, with tensions threatening to boil over on the touchline.

Ayling was visibly angered by something said during the second half and immediately confronted Harwood-Bellis on the pitch.

The disagreement quickly escalated, with referee Andrew Madley forced to speak to both benches as managers Kim Hellberg and Tonda Eckert also became involved.

According to the Press Association, the FA contacted Middlesbrough on Wednesday after reviewing the referee's report.

However, Ayling subsequently indicated that he did not want the matter to be taken any further, meaning the issue is now understood to be closed.

A stammer can amount to a disability under the Equality Act 2010, which is why the allegation was treated seriously.

Southampton have not publicly commented on the incident.

Ayling has previously spoken candidly about living with a speech impediment.

In an interview with the BBC, the 34-year-old explained that he had reached a stage where he was comfortable discussing his stammer openly.

"And I've kind of got to a point now where I just don't care," he said.

The flashpoint was one of several dramatic moments in a fiercely contested semi-final played against the backdrop of Southampton's ongoing "spygate" controversy.

The Saints remain under investigation by the English Football League after a club staff member was alleged to have attempted to observe Middlesbrough training ahead of the first leg.

Potential sanctions, if the club is found guilty, range from a financial penalty to more serious sporting consequences.

On the pitch, Southampton eventually booked their place in the Championship play-off final thanks to Shea Charles's 118th-minute winner.

Harwood-Bellis, 24, has been a key figure in Southampton's promotion push.

The former Manchester City defender is also preparing for a major milestone off the field.

He is engaged to Leah Keane, daughter of Roy Keane, and the couple are due to marry this summer.

They welcomed their daughter Iris in December 2025.
