Merseyside Police were right to quickly reveal the ethnicity of the man arrested in connection with an incident in Liverpool, according to Nigel Farage.

During Liverpool FC’s Premier League parade, a car drove into a crowd of people leaving nearly 50 injured, including four children.

Authorities were quick to confirm a 53-year-old white British man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Many have drawn parallels with Axel Rudakubana’s killing spree in Southport last year, when details about his identity were kept under wraps.

At the time, Farage questioned whether the “truth” was being concealed from the British public.

This time around, the Reform UK leader suggested authorities have learnt their lesson after riots broke out across the country in the wake of the Southport killings.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“After Southport last year was a cover-up, it led to a big gap with conspiracy theories on social media”, he said.

“I called, ‘please, tell us what it is’. It would have been nowhere near as bad last year if we had known the truth.

“This time, I think Merseyside Police have got it right.”

The collision occurred around 6pm on Water Street in Liverpool city centre, shortly after the team's open-top bus had passed through the area.

Thousands of supporters had gathered for the Bank Holiday Monday celebration when a Ford Galaxy rammed into pedestrians, causing chaos and panic among the crowds who had been enjoying the festivities.

Merseyside Police confirmed that the driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, was arrested at the scene.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims told a press conference that the incident was not being treated as terrorism.

"We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle," she said. "It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media."

She added: "We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it."

Twenty-seven people were taken to hospital following the incident, including four children.

Two people sustained serious injuries, one of whom was a child.

A further 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries that did not require hospitalisation.
