Russia has continued to resist calls to sign up to a ceasefire plan

Keir Starmer and fellow European leaders have called Donald Trump from Ukraine to discuss plans for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia from Monday.

The Prime Minister is attending the summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, recently-elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Starmer has called on the US President, who is not present at the discussion, to update him on their support for the American proposal.

Arriving in the capital by train, the European leaders travelled to Ukraine together for the first time, where President Volodymyr Zelensky will host them.

The pre-planned meeting, designed to expose Putin as the main obstacle to peace efforts, follows Trump's calls for a 30-day ceasefire between the warring nations.

The US president also warned that if any temporary treaty is violated, the US and its allies will "impose further sanctions."

In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump declared that the peace process "can all be done very quickly" and that he would "be available on a moment’s notice if my services are needed."

He added: "Thousands of young soldiers are dying on a weekly basis, and everybody should want it to STOP. I do, and the United States of America does, also.

"As President, I will stay committed to securing Peace between Russia and Ukraine, together with the Europeans, and a Lasting Peace it will be! This ceasefire must ultimately build toward a Peace Agreement."

The European leaders will also discuss defending Ukraine's airspace and seas following any potential peace deal.

Russia has continued to resist calls from the US, European nations, and Ukraine to sign up to a ceasefire plan.

The European leaders released a joint statement in which they highlighted Putin as a significant barrier obstructing peace efforts.

It read: "We reiterate our backing for President Trump's calls for a peace deal and call on Russia to stop obstructing efforts to secure an enduring peace.

"Alongside the US, we call on Russia to agree to a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to create the space for talks on a just and lasting peace."

The statement represents a clear shift in the relationship between Donald Trump and the European leaders, with their positions appearing more closely aligned than at any point since the US president took office in January.

Putin has said he would agree to a ceasefire, but only under conditions set by the Kremlin, including preventing Ukraine from replenishing their low military stockpiles.
