Former boxer Campbell secured a comfortable victory with 48,491 votes, representing a 35 per cent vote share

Local residents have shared their thoughts on Luke Campbell's election as the first mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire for Reform UK.

Former boxer Campbell secured a comfortable victory with 48,491 votes, representing a 35 per cent vote share.

Liberal Democrat Mike Ross came second with 37,510 votes, approximately 11,000 votes behind the winner.

Discussing the Reform mayor's win, one local told GB News: "I don't really know what a mayor does."

Another said: "He's a very famous guy. I think he's got the real heart of Hull. I'm impressed. I'm looking forward to it.

"I voted for him because of his passion for the city. I think this is a great city, but it needs people to work for it. There is nothing like a local person to do that."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

A third said: "I'm happy for him as long as he does what he says is good. I'm really happy for him."

A fourth said: "He's alright really. I don't really know because I don't know much about all these. You know what they say and what they do, what they're going to do.

"But sometimes they don't even do it, do they? I voted Labour because I've always voted Labour.

"I don't know why and people have said to me 'why have you voted Labour? Are you happy with them?' I said, 'well, no, not really. It's just someone you vote for'."

Campbell's victory marks an unusual career transition for the Olympic gold medallist who triumphed at London 2012 in bantamweight boxing.

The 37-year-old Hull native told the Daily Telegraph he only committed to running for Reform UK five days before his candidacy was officially confirmed.

"This community shaped me, supported me through my journey in boxing and helped me achieve success," Campbell wrote to constituents. "Now it's my turn to give back and fight for a better future."

Behind his cherubic features lies an iron will, developed through over 200 amateur and professional contests.

Campbell retired from boxing in 2021 with a record of 20 wins and four defeats.

He has been clear about his priorities for the new role, emphasising the need to bridge divides between local government and residents.

"I've seen there's a massive disconnection between the councils and actual people," he told reporters.

"There are a lot of decisions always made for the people, but never with the people."

"There are so many projects that have been wasted, millions of pounds on, and they've not benefited the communities at all," he said.
