The leaked document unveiled eight proposed tax-hiking plans for Britons

Outraged pensioners in Angela Rayner's constituency of Ashton-under-Lyne have hit out at the Deputy Prime Minister after her proposed plans for a tax raid on Britons were revealed.

In a leaked memo, Rayner urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves to implement a multi-billion-pound tax raid on wealthy individuals and businesses, instead of proceeding with planned welfare cuts.

The memo, titled "alternative proposals for raising revenue", was submitted to the Treasury in mid-March ahead of the Spring Statement.

It claimed the policies would be "popular, prudent, and would not raise taxes on working people" - echoing a promise from Labour's 2024 election manifesto.

Taking to the streets of Ashton-under-Lyne, GB News reporter Sophie Reaper spoke to two pensioners, Kenneth and Margaret, in the constituency for their verdict on Rayner's proposal.

Expressing their outrage at their Labour MP, the pensioners claimed that she does "nothing" for her constituents.

They fumed: "It's rubbish!"

When asked if they trust Rayner as Deputy Prime Minister, Kenneth declared: "No, I think she's a load of rubbish. She doesn't do anything for Ashton."

Highlighting Labour's war on pensioners with the scrapping of the winter fuel allowance, Kenneth added: "It's bad enough that we lost the allowance for the heating, the winter fuel allowance.

"They could have halved it, if there's two people in the house, then you both get it, that's what they could have done. Or just one of you get it, so at least someone is getting something."

When pressed by Sophie on whether they feel the Labour Government is "targeting" pensioners and things Britons have worked for "their whole lives", the pensioners agreed.

He told GB News: "It's terrible, it's just like a rabble. I've lost faith in all politics."

Rayner proposed eight tax increases, targeting the rich as an alternative to the £5billion welfare cuts.

The measures would raise taxes by £3billion to £4billion a year, according to estimates cited in the document.

Additional proposals include scrapping the £500 tax-free allowance for dividends and increasing dividend tax rates for the most well-off.

Commenting on the memo, Conservative Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: "This confirms that we are still living with the Labour Party of Jeremy Corbyn. At the very highest level, Labour ministers are debating which taxes to increase next."
