The memo, submitted to the Treasury in mid-March ahead of the Spring Statement, was titled 'alternative proposals for raising revenue'

GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes has launched a scathing attack on Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, following reports of a proposed tax raid on Britons.

According to a leaked memo, Rayner urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves to implement a multi-billion pound tax raid on wealthy individuals and businesses instead of proceeding with planned welfare cuts.

The measures would raise taxes by £3billion to £4billion a year, according to estimates cited in the document.

Additional proposals include scrapping the £500 tax-free allowance for dividends and increasing dividend tax rates for the most well-off.

Discussing the move on GB News, Breakfast host Eamonn Holmes accused the Government of "wanting to get more out of Britons" when they are "already feeling poor enough".

Eamonn fumed: "Now Angela has come forward today and she's saying 'there's lots of ways I think we could get more tax out of them'. So as if you're not feeling poor enough, they're going to get more from you. Where do they think it stops?

"You're going to get to 55 and 65, and you're going to look back and say, what have I got? And you're going to see that they've taken it all, they've taken it all from you in life through tax."

In a pointed criticism of the Labour, Eamonn claimed that taxpayer money is "not our money, it's their money", according to the Government.

Eamonn told GB News viewers: "You're told all your life to do these things, do these responsible things, and then if you do do it, they're going to hit you with a big hammer for it.

"So whether you have it, and good luck to you if you have or you haven't, but they want it. They don't want it to be yours, they want it to be theirs. Does Government not realise that tax money is not their money? It's our money!"

He added: "I know you say the Labour Party is left wing, they're all the same, all of them.

"All of them want to squeeze every pip from your body, from your being, from your bank account. So none of them are any different, absolutely none."

The document shows Rayner proposing eight tax increases targeting the rich as an alternative to the £5billion welfare cuts.

The memo, submitted to the Treasury in mid-March ahead of the Spring Statement, was titled "alternative proposals for raising revenue".

It claimed the policies would be "popular, prudent, and would not raise taxes on working people" - echoing a promise from Labour's 2024 election manifesto.

Commenting on the memo, Conservative Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: "This confirms that we are still living with the Labour Party of Jeremy Corbyn. At the very highest level, Labour ministers are debating which taxes to increase next."
