US and Ukraine representatives held talks about the peace plan in Geneva over the weekend

Ukraine has agreed to a peace deal brokered by Donald Trump to end the war with Russia, it is understood.

A US official said while an understanding had been met, there remained some details that still need to be ironed out.

"The Ukrainians have agreed to the peace deal," the source told CBS News.

"There are some minor details to be sorted out but they have agreed to a peace deal."

US and Ukraine representatives held talks in Geneva, Switzerland, over the weekend about the peace plan which had been set out by President Trump’s administration following discussions with Russia.

Ukraine and its European allies had pushed back against the draft 28-point plan, which contained significant concessions to Moscow.

US army secretary Dan Driscoll met Russian officials for several hours in Abu Dhabi today to discuss the latest developments following the talks with Ukraine.

Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is expected to travel to Washington before the end of this month "to complete final steps and make a deal with President Trump", senior Ukrainian official Rustem Umerov said.

Sir Keir Starmer will later today convene a meeting of the 36 nations in the coalition of the willing to discuss both the peace process and plans for a peacekeeping force to be deployed to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.

The Prime Minister earlier spoke directly with President Zelensky, telling the Ukrainian leader he could rely on Britain's support.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "Reflecting on the talks in Geneva and the diplomatic discussions that have followed, the leaders agreed on the importance of securing a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.

"The Prime Minister said Ukraine could rely on the UK’s support as discussions continued.

"Looking ahead to this afternoon’s Coalition of the Willing call, the leaders discussed the international unity that has been shown in support for Ukraine and underlined the importance of the continued work by coalition partners in preparation for the deployment of the multinational force following the cessation of hostilities.

"The Prime Minister and President looked forward to speaking again soon."

Mr Zelensky said he had had a "good and very productive" conversation with Sir Keir.

Updating MPs in the House of Commons today, the Prime Minister said the UK will "never falter" in its support for Ukraine.

“We will maintain a unity of purpose with our allies, and we will focus on delivering the calm, serious leadership that is needed to advance a just and lasting peace for Ukraine," he said.

Sir Keir said he had spoken to President Trump and welcomed “the continued efforts of the United States to end the war and stop the killing”.

He said the American plan “included points that were not acceptable” but added that it contained “some very important elements” such as security guarantees from the US and other partners.
