A student has killed nine people and wounded 13 more in Turkey's second school shooting in two days.

The gun attack in the southern province of Kahramanmaras was carried out by an eighth-grader who was believed to have taken his father's fire weapons.

The 14-year-old pupil, whose father was an ex-police officer, was armed with five guns and seven magazines in a rucksack, Mukerrem Unluer, the provincial governor, confirmed.

The attacker then carried out a shooting across two of the school's classrooms with fifth graders, who are usually aged between 10 and 11.

The shooter killed eight students and a teacher.

"We regret to report nine deaths... and 13 wounded. Six of them are currently in intensive care, three of whom are in critical condition," Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said.

"This was solely a personal attack carried out by one of our students, it is not a terror incident," he added.

The shooter was killed - although it remains unknown whether the teenager died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or killed by police.

In the attack, the teenager hid the weapons in a rucksack and burst through two classrooms and opened fire "randomly", Mr Unluer added.

Dramatic footage from the shooting captured emergency services descending on the scene, while concerned onlookers congregated by the school gates.

Parents rushed to the institution after hearing the initial reports of the gun attack.

Police have since secured the area, increasing security around the school building, local media reported.

The school shooting comes just a day after another school attack in a neighbouring province

An investigation has been launched into the attack, the Turkish justice minister Akin Gurlek said.

The attack has come just a day after an ex-student carried out a shooting at a high school in the neighbouring province of Sanliurfa.

Sixteen people - both staff and students - were injured in the horrific attack in a dramatic showdown between the shooting and police officers.

The perpetrator then shot himself.

On the whole, school shootings are relatively rare across Turkey, assumedly thanks to the country's strict gun laws.

In Turkey, authorities implement intensive penalties for illegal possession. Only individuals over the age of 21 with a license are allowed to own firearms.

Meanwhile, those applying to be a gun owner are forced to undergo demanding checks, including licensing, registration, mental and criminal background checks.

However, security officers are allow to both carry and own such weapons.
