The alarming notices were issued after advanced weapons tests were picked up in the Arctic

Norwegian authorities have sent more than 13,500 warning letters to citizens informing them that military forces could seize their properties, vehicles, boats and equipment should war break out.

The notices, sent out on Monday, are in effect for 12 months and serve as advance notification to homeowners about potential seizures.

Norwegian military officials say the measures are designed to guarantee that defence forces can access essential resources during any wartime scenario.

For the majority of recipients, the letters were not unexpected - around two-thirds sent were renewals of existing requisition notices from prior years rather than fresh warnings.

The Scandinavian nation has expanded both its armed forces and civilian readiness capabilities in response to growing security threats from Moscow.

Norway occupies a strategically vital position in the Arctic, sharing both a maritime boundary and a 123-mile land frontier with Russia in the far northern reaches.

The country plays a crucial role in Nato's surveillance operations in the region, where retreating ice caps have sparked intense competition for newly accessible shipping lanes and valuable natural resources.

Both Russia and China are actively seeking to strengthen their foothold in the Arctic, with Moscow rehabilitating former Soviet military installations and bolstering its nuclear arsenal on the Kola peninsula.

This Russian military expansion near Norwegian borders has heightened tensions considerably, as the Kola facility houses one of the world's largest concentrations of nuclear warheads.

Norway's Minister of Defence Tore Sandvik has issued a series of warnings about the escalating threat.

He told the Telegraph that Russian forces are expanding their presence on the Kola peninsula, home to one of the planet's most substantial nuclear arsenals.

"They [the nuclear weapons] are not only pointed towards Norway, but towards the UK and over the pole towards Canada and the US," he said.

The minister revealed that Norwegian forces have detected testing of advanced weaponry including hypersonic missiles, nuclear-powered torpedoes and nuclear warheads.

According to Mr Sandvik, Moscow is attempt to secure complete control over Arctic waters, denying Nato access to critical maritime routes.

The requisition letters were sent amid a feud between President Donald Trump and the Norwegian Prime Minister.

In an unsettling message addressed to Norway's Jonas Gahr Store, which was forwarded to multiple European ambassadors in Washington, Mr Trump declared he no longer feels "obliged to think purely of peace".

He wrote: “Dear Jonas - Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped eight wars plus, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.

"Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a 'right of ownership' anyway?

"There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also.

"I have done more for Nato than any other person since its founding, and now, Nato should do something for the United States.

"The world is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland."

The letter also comes just days after the Norwegian PM declared that "threats have no place" among allies in response to the President's tariff announcement.

On Saturday, Mr Store wrote on social media: "Norway's position is firm: Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Norway fully supports the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.

"There is broad agreement in Nato on the need to strengthen security in the Arctic, including in Greenland."

Norway is one of eight countries to be impacted by the freshly unveiled measures, with the President also slapping a 10 per cent tariff on Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK from February 1.
