Other explosions could be heard approximately 30 miles away on the Ras Al-Khaimah coast.
After the airport alert, passengers waiting to board their flights were evacuated from the terminals and hurried down into train tunnels for safety.
Before the explosion, flights were scheduled to operate despite Emirates Airlines announcing operations had been suspended earlier this morning and instructed travellers to not go to the airport.
Local authorities have also paused operations once again following the explosion.

This morning, US President Donald Trump said Iran could face "complete destruction and certain death" and promised the regime could be "hit very hard" today.
Issuing the extraordinary threat, he said: "Iran, which is being beat to HELL, has apologised and surrendered to its Middle East neighbours, and promised that it will not shoot at them anymore.
He added: "Iran is no longer the “Bully of the Middle East,” they are, instead, “THE LOSER OF THE MIDDLE EAST,” and will be for many decades until they surrender or, more likely, completely collapse!
"Today Iran will be hit very hard! Under serious consideration for complete destruction and certain death, because of Iran’s bad behaviour, are areas and groups of people that were not considered for targeting up until this moment in time."
