The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) halted traffic after a reported threat against a plane

Flights have been grounded at a major US airport after a reported threat against a plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) halted all traffic at Reagan Washington National Airport today, with almost 200 flights delayed.

A reported threat was made against a United Airlines UAL.O plane, with all passengers taken off the aircraft.

The FAA said the plane was moved away from the terminal while authorities investigate.

A person briefed on the matter said a bomb threat had been made against the aircraft and in an abundance of caution the plane was being checked.

Reagan Washington National Airport confirmed operations were on hold as passengers on a United flight were being offloaded and bussed to the terminal.

Flight tracking website, FlightRadar24, said the issue was prompted by an unconfirmed threat against a United flight that had arrived from Houston.

The FAA later issued an update saying operations had resumed at the airport.

US Transport Secretary, Sean Duffy, confirmed the alleged bomb threat in a post to social media.

He wrote to X: "Earlier today a United flight from Houston to Washington, DC, received a bomb threat.

"The flight landed safely at DCA, passengers were evacuated, and law enforcement conducted a full search of the aircraft.

"The FAA has received the all clear and operations have resumed.

"I want to thank our brave men and women in law enforcement for their quick response."

More than 190 flights were delayed as a result of the incident, according to FlightAware.

FlightRadar24 said 31 flights had been diverted to nine different airports.

Reagan Airport is located just five miles from the White House and US Capitol.

The FAA imposes special security restrictions around the airspace.
