A Hawaiian Airlines plane has been evacuated after a suspected bomb threat.

The flight, departing from San Diego International and destined for Honolulu, was diverted off the tarmac after the plane had left the gate around 8:30am local time.

Passengers exited the plane at around 10:30am, as emergency vehicles surrounded the jet, according to US media.

Hawaiian Airlines said in a statement that they "immediately taxied" the Airbus A330 to a safe location and contacted the relevant authorities after a onboard passenger was overheard making threats.

The airline did not disclose the nature of the threats.

They said: "There was a security incident this morning involving Hawaiian Airlines Flight 15 from San Diego to Honolulu.

"During pushback from the gate, a guest was overheard making a threat to the safety of our aircraft.

"As a precaution, the captain immediately taxied the Airbus A330 to a safe location on the airfield, where it was met with local and federal law enforcement and guests were safely deplaned."
