The US President made a historic announcement for women today

Donald Trump made a "historic announcement for women today" as he slashed the cost of IVF across the country.

The US President addressed the nation shortly after a call with Vladimir Putin, which he said went "very well".

He said he will "discuss it later" as he went on to reveal the historic change to fertility treatment.

Addressing the nation this evening Mr Trump said: "This is very exciting. I just had a call with President Putin, I thought it was a very good call so we will talk about that later maybe.

"But it went very well.

"We're here today to announce a historic victory for American women, mothers and families with the actions I will outline this afternoon.

"We will dramatically slash the cost of IVF and the treatment and many of the most common fertility drugs for countless millions of Americans."

Mr Trump in February signed an executive order directing the Government to expand access to IVF and reduce the costs of the popular fertility treatment.

IVF involves combining eggs and sperm in a laboratory dish to create an embryo for couples having difficulty conceiving.

The costs for IVF can range from $12,000 to $25,000 per cycle and multiple cycles may be needed to get pregnant.

The US President explained: "For years couples struggling with infertility have faced crushing costs in their quests to start a family. IVF is among the most expensive treatments of all."

"“It’s just a start, one of many things we’re doing today. We’re also taking historic steps to vastly expand access to insurance coverage for fertility care, including IVF something that, as you know, was not previously covered.

Effective immediately, for the first time ever, we will make it legal for companies to offer supplemental insurance plans specifically for fertility. That’s never been done before.

With what we’re signing today, Americans will be able to opt in to specialised coverage just as they do with vision and dental insurance they’re going to get fertility insurance for the first time.”
