The 16-year-old was seen engulfed in flames after the crash - but walked away with only minor injuries

A 16-year-old biker miraculously survived after catching fire in a horrific crash at a Californian crossroads.

Footage of the incident showed the teen running a red light before hitting the side of a car turning off at the junction in the city of Salinas.

The moment the 16-year-old collided with the moving vehicle, the bike, the car, and the rider all erupted in flames.

The video appeared to show the teenager hitting the car around its petrol cap.

Shortly after the crash, the biker's friend was seen rushing over to him and attempting to put out the blaze as the rider appeared to roll in agony on the road.

Despite the dramatic scenes, the teenager remarkably walked away from the ordeal with just a broken ankle and a limp.

Footage showed motorists stopping and getting out of their cars as the fire raged.

Police cited the 16-year-old and his 15-year-old friend for traffic violations, with the duo released back to their parents shortly afterwards.

But now, a fundraising appeal has been launched for the driver of the car involved in the horror smash on October 30.

The motorist's sister, who set up the page, wrote: “My sister Brianna Vargas was suddenly struck by a dirt bike in Salinas, CA at the intersection of N Main and Harden.

“The crash left her injured, and the impact caused her car and all of her belongings inside to catch fire and burn completely.

"She had recently purchased the car less than a week ago, depleting all her savings - every dollar she had diligently earned.”

Photos of the car after the incident show it badly damaged, with the interior burnt and covered in ash, and parts barely hanging on.

Ms Vargas was quickly taken to hospital and later discharged, after suffering from muscle aches, spasms, and temporary pain.

The fundraising page says that the money raised will go towards medical bills, replacing personal items, buying a new car, and support basic living costs.

It was since raised more than $1,200 (£912) over the past few weeks.

In the US, 10 dirt bike riders are killed in accidents each month.

According to the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), the number of casualties involving off-road vehicle users under 16 has risen substantially over the past 20 years.

TIRF research associate Steve Brown said: "There has been an overall increase in off-road vehicle fatalities over the last two decades.

"This highlights a need for enhanced safety measures and increased education.”
