A 24-year-old man detained in connection with mass shooting at the Ivy League establishment is no longer in custody

The gunman who killed two students and injured nine at Brown University over the weekend is still at large after police released a “person of interest”.

A 24-year-old man detained in connection with mass shooting at the Ivy League establishment on Saturday is no longer in custody after investigators determined the evidence no longer supported his involvement.

The state's Attorney General Peter Neronha announced the development at a press conference on Sunday evening.

He said: "Certainly, there was some degree of evidence that pointed to this individual. But that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed

"But over the last 24 hours, leading up to just very, very recently, that evidence now points in a different direction."

"This is what these investigations look like. Sometimes you head in one direction, sometimes you regroup and go in another."

A spokesman for the Providence Police Department said the man was apprehended at 3.45am on Sunday at the Hampton Inn in Coventry following an extensive search of the area.

The city's mayor Brett Smiley expressed frustration the individual's identity had been disclosed before the probe concluded.

"I think what is really unfortunate is that this person's name was leaked to the public," he said. "It's hard to put that back in the bottle.

"While it may be frustrating for certain members of our community to feel like we're not being fully forthcoming with details, the reason is that we're not sharing details that are unconfirmed is that it could compromise our prosecution."

The suspect responsible for killing two students and wounding nine others at the Barus & Holley building is still on the run.

All victims were confirmed to be students at the university, according to its president Christina Paxson.
