The couple are hoping to bring their children with them on the tour Down Under

The new Prince and Princess of Wales could be set to tour Australia as early as next year for the first time with their new royal titles.

It is understood that the Palace is drawing up plans for royal figures to visit as many countries where King Charles III is head of state and Commonwealth nations as possible.

Prince William and Kate Middleton may also take their children with them on their tour down under.

It would not be the first time Prince George has taken the trip, having visited with his parents in 2014 when he was a baby.

The news comes in the wake of New Zealand prime minister confirming she will not push for the country to become a republic following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

While King Charles III is the ruler of the UK, he also oversees 14 other Commonwealth countries including Canada, Jamaica and Australia.

It is understood that the King and Queen Consort had been due to undertake a trip in October but plans are likely to be shelved as the country prepares for a coronation and pressing affairs.

However, there is talk that William and Kate will be heading for Australia, where they would formally accept condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Their planned visit to Australasia in 2020 was cancelled as a result of the Covid pandemic.

The couple may look to visit during the Easter holiday next year in order to facilitate plans to bring their children.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor-General David Hurley will be in the UK for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, and the issue is likely to be raised to them during their visit.

A source told MailOnline that King Charles III is also exploring the prospect of a trip down under, and hopes to do so at an "early opportunity" in his reign.

There will not be a repeat of Queen Elizabeth II's epic Commonwealth tour of 1953, where she and Prince Philip embarked on a trip to 13 Commonwealth nations following her coronation.
