Nigel Farage has hit out at a landmark court ruling from the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) that ruled Governments have a duty to protect people from climate change.
Speaking on GB News, the former Brexit Party leader fears the ruling could ‘do away elections’ because of how it jeopardises the ability of climate change sceptics to enact on their policies.
He was joined by Tim Crosland from the charity Plan B, who argued the effects of climate change justify the need for Governments to protect their citizens.
“What if I stand for the general election and I say this is a load of cobblers?”, Farage asked.

“This is a complete load of nonsense. Co2 has nothing to do with global warming.
“I win a majority in the House of Commons and form a Government. What this judgment means is, I will not be able to carry out the will of the people if I remain a signatory of the ECHR.”

Crosman hit back to argue of the importance of holding those in power to account.
“We have the ECHR, democracy and the rule of law”, he said.
“The point of the rule of law is the powerful are held to account, the vulnerable are protected and we have a law that protects people’s right to family life.
“Its not so different to the other international agreements with have around nuclear proliferation and free trade.”

Farage interjected to ask whether we should ‘scrap’ general elections and instead allow the ECHR to govern.
“Time has moved on a lot since the ECHR was incorporated”, he said.
“Should a court in Strasbourg, made up of a group of people who are mostly not qualified, be allowed to overrule the wishes of the British electorate?”
“They haven’t done”, Crosland argued.
“This is a treaty negotiated by out government, brought into domestic law by the British Parliament.
“If Parliament chooses to do something about that, it can, but it must deal with the consequences of being an international pariah.
“The only other country to have done this in recent years is Russia.”
Farage argued: “The last country before us to leave the EU was Greenland, countries make decisions.”
The court ruled that climate change violates the right to respect for one’s private and family life.
The case was brought by an association of older Swiss women concerned about the health impacts of climate change, arguing the country’s government is not taking enough action.
