A Home Office contractor has come under fire for its controversial new scheme to house asylum seekers

Michelle Dewberry has reacted furiously to a new drive to house asylum seekers in rental properties.

Serco, a private contractor working for the Home Office, is offering landlords a five-year contract with guaranteed rent if they agree to house asylum seekers.

Taxpayers are already spending billions of pounds on hotels for migrants with many continuing to cross the Channel.

Speaking on GB News, Dewbs lambasted the current state of play in Britain.

“If anyone watched my program where we were talking to Labour MP Mike Tapp, you might have realised I’m really angry about this”, she said.

“I talk to you guys [GB News viewers] every day. I listened to what you have to say.

“You’re despairing out there at the moment and it doesn’t seem to be picked up. We’ve reached out to Serco for comment, but they’ve told us they won’t be making one.

“It’s outrageous. I sit there and I can’t believe the direction of travel that this country is on.”

Dewbs made reference to her row earlier this week with a Labour MP where she branded the situation an “absolute mess”.

"My personal opinion is, housing for British people should be first," Tapp stated during the exchange.

Michelle challenged him on the practicalities of this position, asking: "If you're a landlord and you've been squeezed, left, right and centre and someone knocks on your door and says 'we will give you a five-year deal above the rent you're being given, no management fees or maintenance costs', you're telling me you will take the lower offer?"

She repeatedly asked Tapp what he would do if he were a landlord, only for the Labour MP to defend Labour by pinning responsibility to the previous government.

Serco is seeking more landlords across the North West, Midlands and the east of England to lease properties.

The company already manages more than 30,000 asylum seekers in over 7,000 properties, according to their promotional materials.

Despite councils feeling the squeeze prompted by the ever worsening migrant crisis, Serco continues in its attempts to expand its portfolio.

Over 11,000 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year with this week's warm weather providing the conditions required for an uptick in people making the perilous trip.

This figure doesn't include Sunday's or today's arrivals, meaning Labour is likely to face the "humiliating blow" of crossings exceeding 10,000 today.

Housing migrants in hotels costs approximately £145 per night compared to just £14 in private accommodation.
