Rishi Sunak claimed the lawyers were ‘propping up’ human traffickers

Lawyers have been charging migrants thousands of pounds to tell them to lie in orer to avoid deportation.

An undercover reporter revealed staff at solicitors’ firms were happy to advise economic migrants to obtain refugee status.

Legal professionals conceded those arriving in small boats on British shores had no legitimate reason to stay in the United Kingdom.

VP Lingajothy, who owns a multi-million pound property empire and sent his son to Eton College, requested £10,000 to invent a story to use for an asylum application, according to The Daily Mail.

Stories included claims of sexual torture, beatings, slave labour, false imprisonment and death threats.

The reporter was told to say the events left him feeling suicidal and compelled to flee to the UK.

Lingajothy claimed he could get a doctor’s report to support the claim and produced anti-depressants which the Home Office would receive as “evidence” of psychological drama.

Another lawyer from a different firm, who boasted a success rate of more than 90 per cent with asylum cases, suggested creating evidence which would indicate the reporter had a genuine fear of “persecution and assassination”.

A third claimed the reporter should say he feared for his life in India by talking about anti-government political allegiances, a love affair with someone from the wrong caste or being homosexual.

Two lawyers said they would falsely claim The Daily Mail reporter was a “victim of human trafficking” who had been abandoned by people smugglers.

The repercussions for making up false asylum claims range from prison time for immigrants but just professional sanctions for solicitors.

A representative who spoke to The Daily Mail was sacked as the firm also closed one of its offices.

It claimed the actions breached the law and broke the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s code of conduct.

There were 74,751 asylum claims for around 90,000 people in 2022.

The number has doubled in comparison to 2019 and almost all claimants rejected by the Home Office last year appealed.

The Daily Mail’s report left leading members of the Government particularly frustrated.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “This is what we’re up against.

“The Labour Party, a subset of lawyers, criminal gangs - they’re all on the same side, propping up a system of exploitation that profits from getting people to the UK illegally. I have a plan to stop it.”

Sunak went on to discuss the Illegal Migration Bill, deal with Emmanuel Macron, Albanian accord, clampdown on illegal workers, use of barges and options for genuine asylum claims.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman added: “Appalled by what The Daily Mail have uncovered.

“I expect the authorities to track down and punish any lawyers or firms found to be engaging in these kinds of practices.

“Labour should reconsider next time they claim our asylum system isn’t being abused.”

A spokesman for the SRA said last night: “All solicitors should uphold the high professional standards that we and the public expect of them.

“This is especially important in areas such as immigration where those involved may be among the most vulnerable in society.”
