The rant came as the panel discussed the murder of Charlie Kirk

Political commentator Andy Williams has launched a scathing attack on America's gun violence epidemic, describing it as a "sickness" that must end.

His comments came in response to the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Andy Williams said: "There is absolutely no excuse for anyone celebrating Charlie Kirk's death. I completely disagree with his politics and with many of the opinions he held, but that is not the point.

"This was a 31-year-old man with children, who was shot dead in cold blood, and anybody condoning that in any way is completely unacceptable.

"For me, this is about two thing sand Chloe can speak to the Oxford aspect as an alum.

"Firstly, it is about political violence, and whether there is a rise in political violence as a result of political polarisation. If that is the case, it is incredibly concerning.

"I was also troubled by Donald Trump’s comments, which I felt were more divisive than they needed to be.

"I think the President of the United States should have come out and said: this is a time for the nation to come together.

"The second point is the elephant in the room: gun violence in America.

"There were 47,000 gun-related deaths in the US in 2023, compared with 24 in the UK.

"Even adjusting for population, that is 391 times as many gun deaths. This is an American problem, it is a sickness, and it has to stop."

Mr Kirk was shot in front of 3,000 spectators on Wednesday afternoon as he debated university students at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Mr Kirk rose to prominence in American conservative politics as the founder of Turning Point USA, which grew into the country’s largest conservative youth organisation.

The group played a key role in rallying young voter support for Donald Trump during the November election.

Earlier today, Donald Trump revealed that US authorities have the shooter in custody.

He said: "It was a father who got involved, namely his father, and said, we've got to go in.

"And they say, I understand it. And again, subject to change, but you know, the facts are the facts.

"We have the person that we think is the person we're looking for. But they drove into the police headquarters and he's there now."
