The report by the Adam Smith Institute found people claiming cars for 'acne' and a 'bad back'

GB News host Alex Armstrong has hit out at the "bogus" Motability Scheme following a new report, which found people claiming brand new cars for conditions including "acne".

The report, published by the Adam Smith Institute, also found that one in five cars bought by the scheme are exempt from VAT.

Motability helps people with various disabilities lease cars, however the study revealed that only 12 per cent of their fleet of cars are adapted for wheelchair users.

Discussing the report on GB News, Director of Public Affairs at the Adam Smith Institute Maxwell Marlow highlighted the scale of taxpayer money going into the scheme and paying those who run it.

Mr Marlow told GB News: "We're talking up to £3.6billion a year of GB News viewers's money going into quite an opaque charity, non-profit, Government-backed scheme.

"That if you have an enhanced mobility, claim on the welfare state, you could be eligible for a new BMW or a new Lexus, and after three years, you can hand it back to them and they'll give you a brand new one as well.

"You could even get a cash bonus from the charity in order to partake in this scheme, and this is all taxpayer money and £1.2billion of it is actually just removal of many of the taxes that we have to pay if we want to drive privately."

Branding the findings of the report "absolutely bonkers", Alex then asked "what when there is money left over" in the scheme.

Mr Marlow revealed: "It heads right back into the reserves and gets funnelled quite nicely into the pay packets, the people running it.

"The guy running it, the CEO of Motability is on a pay package I think of around £750,000 a year."

Shocked by the remarks, both Alex and Miriam gasped as Alex exclaimed: "What a scam! What a scandal it is, these people are shameless."

Pointing out the low scale of Motability vehicles being given to those who need wheelchair access, Mr Marlow explained: "When you look at who has access to these vehicles, only 12 per cent are adapted for wheelchair use.

"And Motability got quite upset with us about this report, they did a bit press release and at the top of their press release, an image of a woman in a wheelchair. That's only 12 per cent.

"There are people with acne claiming Motability, there are people with bad back claiming, and we've seen over the last few years from Motability's accounts, a massive increase, and we're expecting it to go further because this Government can't get a hold of welfare reform."

Expressing his outrage at the scheme and the report's findings, Alex fumed: "I've got a bad back, maybe I'll get myself a BMW next. It's just absolutely bonkers, isn't it?

"I genuinely just want to scream. British taxpayers will be watching this show going, 'oh my goodness'.

"Not only is there no Government accountability, this is costing us billions of pounds, and most of it I would say is bogus if I'm being honest with you.

"These people don't need cars for acne? Where does this madness end?"

In a statement, a spokesman for Motability said: "Disabled people face huge transport barriers, and Motability is a lifeline, helping people get to work, education and live independently."
