Three people were left seriously injured following the crash

The driver of a double-decker bus which crashed into a bridge in Greater Manchester, leaving more than a dozen people hurt, has been arrested.

The roof of the vehicle was torn off as a result of the collision on Barton Lane in the Salford area at around 3pm on Monday, July 21.

It caused a member of the public to be "ejected from the top deck", Greater Manchester Police said.

The driver of the bus, a man aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.

The force confirmed in a statement today that he has since been bailed pending further investigations.

"It is believed that the bus had come off its normal expected route," GMP said.

"The driver failed to comply with height restriction warnings, including hanging chains and signage, and collided with a low-level aqueduct."

Three people, including a 19-year-old woman and two men, were left seriously injured as a result of the crash.

Buses have previously crashed into the same bridge

Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester, confirmed yesterday an "immediate and urgent investigation" had been launched into the crash.

Everitt said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with everyone on board the bus. Our absolute focus has been on supporting emergency services in their response, with some people treated at the scene and some taken to hospital.

"An immediate and urgent investigation into the circumstances is underway and we are working closely with the investigation team at Greater Manchester Police and the bus operator, Stagecoach.

“This is clearly a distressing situation for everyone involved and we’d like to thank emergency services for their swift response."

It is not the first time a bus has been involved in a collision with the bridge on Barton Lane.

In April, 2023, the roof of another bus was ripped off when it struck the same bridge.
