Christian Brueckner is currently on trial for a series of sex offences unrelated to the missing Briton

The former workplace of Christian Brueckner, Madeleine McCann’s suspected killer, is set to be demolished over fears it could become a shrine.

The owners of the kiosk in Braunschweig, Germany, are planning to pull down the store, where the 48-year-old drifter has both worked and lived.

He had rented the kiosk and apartment above it, owned by a German businessman, in December 2012.

The move comes as Brueckner goes on trial for a series of sex offences – unrelated to McCann - between 2000 and 2017.

A source said: “The landlord here is now just sick and tired of all the negativity which Brueckner has brought to this place.

“The whole world now knows this is the place where he worked and also hung out with his mates out the back, boozing and partying throughout the night and causing trouble.

“Everyone is very aware of how destructive having this in the city is,” they told The Sun.

The source said that the kiosk has become infamous, with people regularly turning up to cause trouble.

A local named Norbet took over Brueckner’s role in 2014.

Brueckner is currently on trial for the rape of a woman in her 70s in her home in the Algarve and the rape and sexual assault of a teenage girl.

He also faces allegations that he raped a young woman, at knifepoint in her home, in 2004 - an act he is accused of recording on video.

The court in Braunschweig also heard that he masturbated in front of a girl at a playground in Messines in June 2017 and faces claims he did the same in front of another girl, on Salema beach, Portugal, in April 2007.

The German prisoner remains a prime suspect behind the disappearance of three-year-old McCann.

He has denied being involved in the abduction in 2007 and has not been charged with any crime related to it.

The trial has resumed today after a week off after Brueckner's defence team claimed that one of the lay judges had made death threats on social media about former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro.

He said the woman had written “kill the b*****d now” and "kill the devil", and suggested that the judge in question was unfit to sit on the case.

As Germany does not use a jury system, the case is being heard at Braunschweig regional court in front of a panel of five judges.

Judge Christina Engelmann ruled the lay judge could not preside over the case due to the posts and the hearing was to be adjourned.
