Jay Slater went missing in Tenerife last summer

Jay Slater's death has been ruled accidental after falling down a ravine, a coroner has concluded.

The British teenager's body was found "mummified" by the blistering Tenerife sun, the inquest heard.

The 19-year-old went missing in Tenerife last summer, sparking a massive search and social media attention.

He had told his friends he was "in the middle of the mountains" and in need of a drink, as he attempted a 14-hour walk home the morning after taking drugs and alcohol on a night out, Preston Coroner’s Court has heard.

In a tearful tribute to her son, Debbie Duncan told Preston Coroner’s Court that Slater had a "wonderful life" and was a "joy to be around".

Duncan said he was "counting down the days" until his holiday to Tenerife.

She described the teenager as "a popular boy with many, many friends" before adding that her son’s story had "touched the hearts of the nation".

Reading a pen portrait at Preston Coroner’s Court, Debbie Duncan said of the 19-year-old: "He loved his family very much and was not afraid to show affection."

She added: "He was very loved and our hearts are broken. Our lives will never be the same without Jay in it."

The teenager from Oswaldtwistle, Lancaster, had attended the NRG music festival on June 16 before being reported missing two days later.

His body was discovered on July 15 in the remote mountainous area, Juan Lopez ravine, almost a month after he initially went missing.

Slater's final video message showed him walking along a main road, with Geoghegan noting his friend appeared "in a better way" than during their previous encounter.

It was concluded that Slater died an accidental death after falling from a height of around 20 to 25 metres and suffering skull fractures and brain trauma, coroner Dr James Adeley said.

The coroner said the 19-year-old would have died instantly from the injuries sustained from the fall.

Dr Adeley said contributing factors to the fall may have been a lack of suitable clothing, sleep and mountain training, as well as potential after effects of drugs he had consumed.

He noted that on the night of June 16, 2024, and afterwards, there was "every indication" that Slater’s friends who were accompanying him on the holiday were concerned about him, tried to find him and look after his welfare.

Home Office pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd said during the inquest that the head injury was "so severe" that unconsciousness would have been immediate, with death potentially instantaneous.

No evidence of assault or restraint was found.

Toxicology expert Dr Stephanie Martin confirmed the presence of MDMA, MDA, cocaine and alcohol in Slater's system.

Dr Adeley said: "This is a tragic death of a young man."
