A fishing museum wants to address objects that could have links to 'slavery, colonialism, and racism'

Britain's North Sea fishermen are set to be decolonised as a museum seeks to address possible links between the heritage and "colonialism and racism".

The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is reviewing its collection of material on decimated fishing fleets, assessing objects related to the work of the trawlermen.

The centre will look at items used by the fishermen to determine whether they were "problematic".

Connections to slavery will be analysed by the centre, which plans on focusing on information of individuals from diverse backgrounds and "protected characteristic groups".

The museum said it wants to "share how museum objects can represent stories of slavery, colonialism, and racism, and are committed to addressing the legacy of these subjects through open and honest conversations with those we represent".

Local fishermen in Grimsby have recently voiced their outrage after describing Sir Keir Starmer's fishing deal as the "death of the industry".

Once the world's premier fishing port, Grimsby possess many artefacts linked to North Sea fishing fleets.

Displays of women mending nets and fishermen in the typical yellow raincoat are visible.

The centre also shows a local pub in the 1950s and a mock British chippy.

It has insisted that it will decolonise to fit in line with common practice in museums and heritage sectors.

The work will review any "problematic objects, interpretation or terminology" with respect to "decolonisation and people from protected characteristic groups".

The heritage centre will ensure the displays are "inclusive of multiple narratives".

A North East Lincolnshire council spokesman said: "Work is ongoing and the team are currently undertaking a collections review in respect to items related to decolonisation and people from protected characteristic groups."

Greater Lincolnshire's Reform Mayor Dame Andrea Jenkyns said this is "exactly the kind of woke nonsense that Reform is committed to ending".

Speaking to the Telegraph, Jenkyns explained: "British fishermen have already been dealt a tough hand and betrayed by one incompetent Government after another.

"The people who built this country - our builders, fishermen, military personnel, teachers, and doctors - deserve the highest respect. The growing sense of guilt and lack of patriotism plaguing Great Britain must be reversed.

Andrea JenkynsTice has called the Greater Lincolnshire mayoral election for Dame Andrea JenkynsPA

"For patriotism to thrive, the British people need confidence in their leaders and the unshakeable belief that their Government puts them first. That trust has been lost under recent leadership.

"Only Reform will restore it and remind Britons of the many reasons to be proud of our country: a proud heritage of generosity, innovation, and tradition."

The news follows the Bank of England considering ditching Winston Churchill's face from banknotes in a diversity push.

Threadneedle Street is seeking suggestions from the public for who should be on the back of bank notes, as it suggested modern issues should now be considered when planning the designs, including gender, ethnicity and disability.
