The world is entering a “crazy or extraordinary moment” after Donald Trump doubled down on his desire to take control of Greenland, a security expert has told GB News.

The US President told world leaders in Davos this afternoon that he is seeking immediate negotiations to acquire Greenland.

He said: "We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won't do that"

Ahead of his speech, international security expert Elisabeth Braw told The People's Channel: "He had an opportunity yesterday, before leaving Washington for Davos, to maybe back down a bit or use an off ramp, of which there are many.

"But instead he reiterated that he wants Greenland and essentially left it open how he's going to get it.

"He didn't leave it open whether he would get it, and he left the means open.

"And it's extraordinary, really. I think we just have to step back and realise what a crazy or extraordinary moment we're living through.

"Ordinarily, in Davos, people hold polite speeches and polite meetings.

"The most turbulent one expected in the past was from somebody like Putin.

"Now we're expecting turbulence from the speech Donald Trump is about to deliver.”

Greenland’s strategic location between North America and the Arctic makes it a key asset for early warning systems in the event of missile attacks, as well as for monitoring vessels operating in the region.

However, under existing defence agreements with Denmark, the United States already has the authority to deploy as many troops to Greenland as it wishes.

The US currently has more than 100 military personnel permanently stationed at Pituffik Space Base on Greenland’s north-western tip, a facility that has been operated by Washington since World War Two.

Following a recent visit to Washington for talks, both Denmark and Greenland signalled they are open to the possibility of additional US troops being stationed on the territory in the future.

In a direct appeal to European countries, Mr Trump said: "You all follow us down and you'll follow us up.

"The UK produces just one third of the total energy from all sources that it did in 1999.

"They're sitting on top of the North Sea, one of the greatest reserves anywhere in the world. But they don't use it.

"That's one reason why their energy has reached catastrophically low levels with equally high prices".

"I want Europe to great. I want the UK to do great, they're sitting one of the greatest energy sources in the world and they don't use it."
