The system, backed by Sir Keir Starmer, would create a digital platform to verify identity for services

A GB News live audience member has slammed plans for digital IDs, stating "I don't understand it" and questioning the need for the system.

Panellist Adam Brookes agreed, slamming them a "digital prison for society in a scathing rant."

Digital IDs is a new Government initiative linking personal data to benefits, passports and driving licences.

The system, backed by Sir Keir Starmer, would create a digital platform to verify identity for services, but critics warn it could be used to monitor and control citizens.

The GB News live audience member said: "I do hope there’s a U-turn on digital IDs, considering there have been over two million votes on the petition against it.

"I’d like to know how much this is going to cost the taxpayer. I also believe that this week, perhaps without people realising, the Government’s digital ID has been uploaded onto some phones, if no one’s checked.

"But how safe will that data be? People in this country already have forms of ID such as passports, driving licences, National Insurance numbers, so it just doesn’t make any sense."

Mr Brookes agreed: “Basically, you want us to live like China, where there’s a social credit system. If you speak out against the authorities in China, you might not be able to travel on a train.

"If you want to protest, they can stop your ability to use your card, get your benefits, or access your pension.

“At the end of the day, this was not in their manifesto. The public is aware of the control mechanism that digital ID could bring about, it’s all over social media. Everyone I speak to is against this.

“And this is coming from someone who thought you should have ID to vote a physical card. A physical card can’t stop you from doing anything.

"But a digital platform linked to your benefits, your pension and your social credit score is a digital prison in this society. It does not belong in Britain.”

Sir Keir Starmer’s Government has rejected calls to halt the rollout of digital ID, despite almost 2.7 million Britons signing a petition opposing the plan.

Speaking to GB News, Sir Keir confirmed the Government is pressing ahead with mandatory Digital ID cards, arguing the scheme will help prevent illegal migrants from working in the black economy.

Modelled on Estonia’s system, the proposal would require all UK citizens and legal residents aged 16 and over to hold a free national ID card.

A petition opposing Digital ID quickly gained traction following Sir Keir Starmer’s announcement last Friday.

More than 2.7 million Britons signed the petition by yesterday, including over 3,000 in the Prime Minister’s own constituency of Holborn and St Pancras.

Polling by More in Common also shows growing public opposition.

After recording a net support of +35 per cent in June, backing for the plan plunged to -14 per cent following Sir Keir’s announcement.
