The police have confirmed a zero-tolerance policy going forward

The Metropolitan Police has issued a stern warning to the young people involved in the disorder in Clapham yesterday, as there will be a "robust and visible" policing plan in place this afternoon.

Police have warned more arrests will take place over the coming days as CCTV and body camera video is assessed.

The force has also made clear that anyone involved in similar events or trying to promote them will be dealt with a zero-tolerance approach.

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who is leading police efforts in the area, said: "We recognise the concern that this incident will have caused the community in Clapham.

"We have a clear plan in place should any further disorder take place in the coming days and are in close contact with our partners and businesses in the area.

"Our officers will continue to maintain a strong, visible presence around Clapham and we will respond robustly to any reports of disorder, thefts or planned meet-ups.

'"I’d urge those young people who think this is just a bit of fun to carefully consider the consequences.

"Events like this, fuelled by online trends and viral content on platforms such as TikTok, can quickly escalate and lead to serious outcomes."

She continued: "If you join in or cause further disorder, you should expect to be arrested and risk a criminal record, which can have long-lasting consequences for your future, including employment opportunities and potentially your ability to travel.

"There is widespread CCTV coverage on streets and in businesses in the area and we’re already reviewing that footage, as well as officers’ body-worn video cameras, to identify those who committed offences on Saturday and last night.

"The parents/ guardians of those involved in last night’s disorder also have a role to play.

"I’d appeal to them to take responsibility – to be proactive in knowing where their children are and who they’re with, and to take steps to make sure they’re not involved in this sort of unacceptable antisocial behaviour."

Three teenage girls were already arrested on suspicion of theft and assault following anti-social behaviour involving a large group of young people in Clapham High Street on Saturday.

Police issued a Section 35 dispersal that allows police to direct individuals to leave a specified area for up to 48 hours.

Eyewitnesses said officers were forced to turn away shoppers yesterday, with all stores in the area being forced to close.

Fires could be spotted burning on nearby Clapham Common as emergency services attended to put them out, sending smoke billowing into the air.

Mohammed, a security guard for M&S, told the Mail: "Police warned us there would be chaos so we prepared for it because of what happened last Saturday.

"There were loads of kids sprinting and shouting and police advised all the shops to close for one hour.

"We had to lock shoppers in, at 8.15pm we let them out one by one with police and security holding the doors shut and escorting them out.

"Shoppers were very scared. There was one lady with a pram and a baby. She was terrified but police escorted her to safety."

Footage showed a large gathering on Saturday, initially meeting up at the nearby netball and basketball courts before running out onto the streets as the atmosphere became increasingly chaotic.

Other videos showed crowds running up and down the road past confused onlookers.

One showed a Sainsbury's where a young girl was filmed hitting a police officer and another showed a young girl running out of the shop and away from officers.
